This is the Truth Social post, which the article quotes but doesn't quite convey the flavor of:

https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/1161445529692...

> THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL NEVER ALLOW A RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY TO DICTATE HOW OUR GREAT MILITARY FIGHTS AND WINS WARS! That decision belongs to YOUR COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, and the tremendous leaders I appoint to run our Military.

> The Leftwing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War, and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution. Their selfishness is putting AMERICAN LIVES at risk, our Troops in danger, and our National Security in JEOPARDY.

> Therefore, I am directing EVERY Federal Agency in the United States Government to IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology. We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again! There will be a Six Month phase out period for Agencies like the Department of War who are using Anthropic’s products, at various levels. Anthropic better get their act together, and be helpful during this phase out period, or I will use the Full Power of the Presidency to make them comply, with major civil and criminal consequences to follow.

> WE will decide the fate of our Country — NOT some out-of-control, Radical Left AI company run by people who have no idea what the real World is all about. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

  PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

I mentioned his insane threats to Netflix earlier and tried to Google an article that referenced it. None of them linked or even broadly quoted it.

There's been a concerted effort to hide the fact that the US President is posting insane shit every day for years.

The sanewashing of that nutbar from every media outlet in the States has been equally as breathtaking as the rants themselves.

Link to the Netflix threats?

You're probably thinking, that's not so bad. He didn't even threaten to invade an ally or call this overqualified black woman "low-IQ" like he often does but to any time traveller flung forward from just a decade ago, this is indistinguishable from Idiocracy.

The concerted effort to hide his insane rants is unforgivable.

You really think it’s him tapping away those Troots?

"Want it done right, do it yourself." First said by Donanld J. Trump, 1863

It's just so great to have a president whose public statements sound like a 3-year-old having a tantrum. Every agency must immediately cease all use of Anthropic's technology, except the agencies that are using Anthropic's products?

Does anyone know (more precisely) what the military wanted to use Claude for and what Anthropic was resisting?

Their statement called out automatic weapons targeting and domestic surveillance as two lines they would not cross

Anthropic's statement specified mass domestic surveillance. Not all domestic surveillance. And fully autonomous weapons with today's systems. Not automatic targeting. And not never.

Not targeting, automatic firing. They want a human to chose when to fire, but they AI can so the targeting.

But.. we already have automatic weapons targeting systems and the PATRIOT act, which enjoys bi-partisan support already providing basically limitless domestic surveillance.

Doesn't mean Anthropic wants their tech making it even worse.

Agreed, but the details released so far are pretty sparse on what exactly was being asked. If they're resisting general AI to help missiles find their target better, then I think it's pretty foolish of Anthropic to resist because that's happening come hell or high water. If it's about resisting mass surveileance without a warrant of American citizens, then I'd cheer Anthropic on for pulling out, but we just don't know apparently.

The Department of Defense demanded contracts which would allow any lawful use. Anthropic refused to allow mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons until fully autonomous weapons could be more reliable.[1]

He writes like a deranged uncle on FACEBOOK... which explains a lot about why he is popular.

Text (it is short):

> President Trump on Friday ordered all federal agencies to stop using artificial intelligence technology made by Anthropic, an order that could vastly complicate intelligence analysis and defense work.

> Writing on Truth Social, Mr. Trump used harsh words for Anthropic calling it a “radical Left AI company run by people who have no idea what the real World is all about.”

> Still, Mr. Trump announced a “Six Month phase out” for the Pentagon and some other agencies, a period of time that could allow for more extended negotiations between Anthropic and the Defense Department. Calling the company “Leftwing nut jobs,” he said they had made a mistake trying to strong-arm the Pentagon.

> Mr. Trump’s statement came as the Pentagon and Anthropic were, despite an escalating war of words, continuing to negotiate a compromise. While some current and former American officials had expressed hope of some sort of deal before the Pentagon’s 5:01 p.m. deadline, Mr. Trump’s comments will undoubtedly complicate matters.

The Truth Social post, which is, well, you can decide for yourself: https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/1161445529692...

Presumably the real world is all about hanging out with Russian oligarchs and child traffickers

And a payoff or two to the presidential protection racket. Nice AI business you have there, what a shame if something happened to it…

I concur it’s not necessarily totally absurd — but when you consider that such contraptions require large — very large! — receiving arrays to be built on the ground, it’s hard to avoid concluding that building gigantic photovoltaic arrays in, say Arizona (for the US) along with batteries for overnight buffering and transmission lines would still be massively more efficient.

To keep torturing the metaphor, LLMs might be more like those electric unicycles (Onewheel, Inmotion, etc) – quite speedy, can get you places, less exercise, and also sometimes suddenly choke and send you flying facefirst into gravel.

And some people see you whizzing by and think "oh cool", and others see you whizzing by and think "what a tool."

More like the Segway... really cool at first then not really then totally overpriced and failed to revolutionize the industry. And it killed the founder

Just a small correction, the founder of Segway is Dean Kamen who is still alive. It was the then-owner of the company who died.

It would have been cooler if this comment was by the founder :)

Oh boy do I wish I was nearly as cool as Dean Kamen. :)

thanks saved me googling if Kamen was still alive!

Is there a modern segway? I mean, I find ebikes are probably a better option in general, but it seems like all the pieces to recreate the segway for a much lower price are there already.

Looks like the closest thing is the self balancing stuff that segway makes. Otherwise it's just the scooters.

e-skateboards?

Also: you can ride 8 of them, slowly, asynchronously.

Maybe more like a fatbike for the mind: pretending to cycle with zero effort and exercise.

According to this US government site, 5-year survival rates across all cancer sites have improved from 50% to 75% between 1974 and 2017. (For men it started at more like 40%).

That’s not utterly transformative but I wouldn’t call it negligible either.

> The intern was reportedly shaken, so McBurney offered to drive him home. ICE agents then surrounded the judge’s car and demanded everyone to exit the vehicle, threatening to smash in the windows if they did not comply.

> Dana Smith, Head of Security Operations for R.I. Superior Court, confronted the agents and told both the judge and the intern to stay inside the car. After an argument, ICE confirmed they had misidentified the teen and left. The intern was released once his ID was checked.

Bravo to the head of security for the court for holding his ground and defending the judge and intern.

What if a self-driving car accepted as input the muttered opinion of every adult and child in the car, as well as transcripts of all of our in-laws and friends phone calls as to where the car should go?

Well, the subset of stations that pulled the show were the ones owned by a (right-wing) company, Nexstar, that has proposed a merger that is up for FCC review. It wasn’t fear of being punished for allowing a “falsehood” on the air, it was pursuit of favorable treatment from a political appointee.

Sinclair (38 stations) also pulled it and they own more than Nexstar (28 stations).

FWIW The Hollywood Reporter also is reporting that advertisers started threatening to pull their support as well[0] as several smaller stations.

> Meanwhile, the advertiser calls began to roll in and then the big affiliate conglomerates, Nexstar and Sinclair, threatened to preempt the show. The second source says that the blowback was snowballing enough that had ABC not acted, Kimmel’s show would have been dark in a large swath of the country, even beyond the Sinclair and Nexstar territories (including in the Washington, D.C., metro area).
