Realistically, how difficult is it to write a brand new operating system like this? Could a few people with full-time jobs write a working model in a year? Maybe 10 people? Is it just too time consuming with too little of a payout? There should be more options; I think a lot of people can agree on that.
While I was unemployed I almost launched a Kickstarter to build it, but I figured not enough people were interested.
I think a runnable prototype could be done by a couple of people in a year if you focused on a very tight hardware subset, say Raspberry Pi 3 and VirtualBox x86.
