Sorry, but I don't buy it. I believe this is just effective marketing which is exploiting the current Facebook, Google, Microsoft privacy discussions.

Apple doesn't care about privacy, it cares about money and will continue playing this record from now on. The main reason why they did not go on the user data gathering/selling is mainly incompetence. They were just so far back in terms of user tracking that they just went 'fuck it, we'll consider this a feature now'.

Also, let's not forget they are part of PRISM (which they lied about).

Just wait for iphones to start declining in sales (and they will) and have the privacy talk again.

I don't "trust" Apple, but they have been hyping security and privacy as a competitive advantage for several years now. Their business model is selling hardware and support, not in advertising and data.

For now, let's talk again in a couple of years.. https://www.wsj.com/articles/apple-looks-to-expand-advertisi...

Now matters quite a bit to me. I'm unable to predict the future well.

But it seems like people are willing to pay a premium for privacy. So why can't Apple care about both?

There's a lot of money to be made by both selling a premium product and selling data.

Pandering to the security-minded doesn't scale well.
