Perhaps these most detailed account of the AIDS epidemic in the US is "And the Band Played On" by Randy Shilts. He too died of it.

My Uncle gave me a hardback copy of The Band Played On in 93 shortly before he died of AIDS. I’ve read it every 5ish years since his death and I cry every time.

Technology is rewriting the future of this virus and I can’t help but to think what might have been different had he contracted HIV in a different time.

You need only look at South Africa to see what could have happened if it came 20 years earlier.

Second recommendation for that book. It really captures the reality of AIDS at the time.

Also recommend the HBO movie version of the book.
