I think caryd is wrong. People seem to be having problems with evidence based reasoning. People seem to distrust scientific experiments and data. Part of that may be in reaction to the commercial noise about products, usually in health care, which are "scientifically proven" to do impossible things.
This issue here is that the same scientists are giving contradictory reports. We need them to be adults and admit "We were wrong about x, the truth is actually y. Here is the proof.". As long as both versions exist without the redaction, both will be quoted forever.
