In terms of financial freedom it may even be lesser or less secure but many people would still go towards being their own boss for the sake of freedom. And in fact all my friends who got massive investments have barely any freedom now.

Agreed. I think if money is the primary goal, getting a job at a FAANG is a more certain path. Freedom or agency is my biggest motivation.
