I solve this by building a 3x VPS (one node per continent)/2x home fiber combination (for redundancy). That way you get the best of both worlds:

For real-time stuff you use VPS, for bandwidth/storage you use home since those are cheaper there!

I use all passively cooled, lead-acid backed; Atom (loadbalancer/fast disk) + Raspberry 2/4 (slow disk/workhorse) and my own stack that uses Java.

This week google had a breakdown, so now I'm going to make my backups (AWS in asia and IONOS in US) part of the default DNS.

Only problem I have is IONOS does not easily scale up so I dont know what to do for low latency VPS workhorse in the US!
