Re-thinking electronic mail
There seems to be less spam for SMS. At least I does not seem to be a problem? So maybe the idea of a small fee for the sender is not bad?

SMS spam is exploding for some.[1] A good 25% of my messages are from an address like 1a02341234e7@uyah23f.com.

This is not true in India, at least. There is so much SMS spam here that everyone defaults to WhatsApp for any kind of actual communication with a human. SMS is reserved for bank OTPs, 2FA, and and and endless deluge of marketing messages.
