An exceptional audio recording of Civil War experience by Captain Julius Howell of 24th "Vur-jinya" calvary.

Recorded in 1948 at the age of 101. He died shortly afterward at age of 102 in June 19, 1948.

And in the audio recording, he takes it all the way home at the 10m30s timemark.

Unfortunately for Capt. Howell's recollection, the causes of secession as published by many of the states were explicit about slavery: https://www.battlefields.org/learn/primary-sources/declarati...

I don't know if it be hagiography or truth, but according to Freeman, Lee himself admitted he had fought for his State, but it had been in the wrong. (see the later chapters, about his time at W&L*, and how he counselled postbellum reconciliation)

(and as far as States' Rights go, reflect upon the company they keep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQLapDdEKmY )

* as it would become

Upon reading the VA secession (where Captain Howell was based in), VA made no reference to preservation of slavery.

¶1: "the oppression of the Southern Slaveholding States."
