I knew a guy who came back — in his late 70s — to do "flange design" for old oil pipelines whose lifespan was being extended beyond the original expected span. He said — inflation adjusted — he made more money each month consulting than he did his last year working salaried at the same company. Bc he consults, he only does 3–4 months of work a year.
Similarly my great uncle works on satellite systems. His income over 5 years when brought out of retirement to service legacy systems was greater than his income over his entire prior USG career.
