It likely died for 3 reasons, all related. First, it only supported the Amazon app store, not Google Play, and no one cares about that.
Second, Google decides what versions of Android get the Play Store and not all "open" versions qualify. Google telemetry and other stuff are required, so MS would never get the Play Store.
