I'll add that I spent decades not learning to set up a guitar properly or acquiring the tools to do so. It turns out it's not nearly as difficult or expensive as I feared. To be fair it's a lot easier now than when I started, with youtube tutorials etc.

In particular, I now own a string height gauge, which was very cheap and makes the action assessment more empirical.
