Some are obsolete at this point, and others by necessity cover different portions of programming language technologies. I guess what I'm saying is, for the average software engineer, there's not too many more choices in Python for programming facilities than in Javascript.

You're right, it's not like there are actually 14 competing standards, but there are still too many—and that goes for Javascript as well.
